First Week in Haiti

First Week in Haiti

Well, we are now in Haiti, slowly adjusting to the heat and getting reacquainted with how things are done here.  Our journey went well, starting with our checked bags being 50 lbs exactly!  We realised that travelling with a baby gets you in a lot of priority lines, so we got through security in record time in each airport.

A few days in we were able to go on a walk around the community with a local plumber and take a look at some possible sites for the well.  He is going to do some research into the cost of cisterns, pipes, etc.  It was wonderful to start taking some steps towards planning this project.

We are spending a lot of time with family and are so thankful for the time to reconnect. Evangeline is loving all the attention; she got her hair braided for the first time and is enjoying several bucket baths a day to deal with the heat.  My sisters are teaching Leah how to make a few Haitian dishes, and it is amusing to see them miming explanations to each other when Leah reaches the limits of her Creole.

We brought marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers along with us and had a blast introducing the family (and several neighbour kids) to the wonders of s’mores.  I think it was a hit.  We’ve had very limited electricity per day since we arrived so it was a family event that didn’t require power.

Next on the agenda is to visit Haiti Arise and make a few more connections.  We will be ending off the trip with Sammy preaching at a local church.
